<p>Barcelona is a great place to find food with the eclectic mix of kitchens from around the world inviting you to try anything from Cebiche to Kow Neow, as well as the fantastic local specialties too numerous to name. The Spanish have an obsession with meat, and Pork in particular (they sell the brains in the supermarket, right alongside the trotters, ears and tails for God&#8217;s sake!) and most restaurants will offer you cured hams, roasted of grilled meats or at least have a very meat orientated menu &#8211; which is not much fun if you&#8217;re a Vegetarian or a Vegan.</p>
<p><span id="more-80"></span></p>
<p>I&#8217;m going to give you the lowdown on Vegetarian and (mainly) Vegan options if you&#8217;re visiting Barcelona. If you don&#8217;t know the city well, it&#8217;s of pure co-incidence that these restaurants are all fairly close together, considering the size of Barcelona, and the scope it has for restaurants.</p>
<p>First up is Juicy Jones. </p>
<p>Juicy Jones has a couple of establishments &#8211; both in the old town. The one just off Las Ramblas, on Carrer Cardenal Casañas behind the PC City computer store is more of a Juice Bar, whereas the onelocated on Carrer Hospital is a little bigger. Juicy Jones offers the freshest ingredients for some fantastic concoctions and always a varied menu. Well worth a try.</p>
<p>Just two streets up from Carrer Hospital is Carrer Pintor Fortuny, and this is the location for two of the restaurants on the list. First is Organic, which is on the corner of Xuclá and as the name suggests, serves all organic produce and is very central, just a minute&#8217;s walk from Las Ramblas. Organic has another establishment on Carrer Hospital, at Plaça Sant Agusti &#8211; just a minute&#8217;s walk from Juicy Jones above.</p>
<p>Walk a little further into the Raval neighbourhood, following Pintor Fortuny, and on the opposite side of the road is BioCenter &#8211; another great spot for Vegan and Vegetarian munchies. </p>
<p>The shop bearing the same name on the opposite side of the road also offers produce and goods if you&#8217;re renting a self-catering apartment, for example &#8211; along with other main supermarkets like nearby Carrefour and el Corte Inglés at Plaça Catalunya.</p>
<p>Finally we have Sesamo, which is located on Carrer Sant Antoni Abat, at the end, right next to Sant Antoni Market. This is a small, but popular place and serves &#8220;comida sin bestias&#8221; or &#8220;food without beasts&#8221;!</p>
<p>One last place worth a mention is &#8220;Fresco&#8221; which is an all you can eat buffet with various locations around the city centre, and although it&#8217;s not strictly Vegetarian/Vegan, there&#8217;s a huge salad bar for starters (go back as many times as you like), and there is almost always some vegetarian alternatives, such as pasta with pesto and cheese sauces, etc. I thought it&#8217;s worth a mention as it&#8217;s very good value for money &#8211; and healthy to boot.</p>

<p>Ingredients:<br />
-1/2 cup flax seeds<br />
-1/2 cup flax meal<br />
-6 medium tomatoes<br />
-1 cup sun-dried tomatoes, soaked 2 hours or more<br />
-1 tablespoon lemon juice<br />
-1/4 cup fresh basil<br />
-3 tablespoons dried Italian herb mix<br />
-3 medium onions<br />
-1 clove garlic<br />
• Grind all ingredients in a food processor<br />
• Spread evenly and thinly over 2 Paraflexx dehydrator trays, right to the edges and then use a knife or spatula to score into individual squares .<br />
• Dehydrate at 105 degrees for 3 hours then invert onto another mesh dehydrator tray to finish drying in the dehydrator for a further 10 – 18 hours.<br /><strong><br />
Pine Nut Cheese Spread</strong><br />
Ingredients</p>
<p>-1/2 cup pine nuts<br />
-1/2 cup macadamias<br />
-2 teaspoons lemon juice</p>
<p> </p>
<p>-1/4 teaspoon salt<br />
-2 teaspoons nutritional yeast<br />
-1/4 cup water<br />
• Grind all ingredients in a food processor.</p>
<p><strong>Tomato Sauce</strong><br />
-4 medium tomatoes, de-seeded<br />
-1/4 cup sun-dried tomatoes, soaked 2 hours or more<br />
-1 soft date<br />
-1 clove garlic<br />
-2 teaspoons olive oil<br />
-1 tablespoon fresh basil<br />
-1 tablespoon dried oregano<br />
-2 teaspoons lemon juice<br />
-Blend all ingredients in a high-speed blender until smooth.</p>
<p><strong>Pesto</strong><br />
-2 cups basil, tightly packed<br />
-1 tablespoon minced rosemary<br />
-1/4c pine nuts<br />
-1T olive oil<br />
-1/4t salt<br />
-2t lemon juice<br />
• Pulse all ingredients in a food processor until broken down, but leaving some texture to the finished pesto.</p>
<p><strong>Assembly</strong><br />
- Start with the flax cracker as a base to which you&#8217;ll add a layer of the nut cheese spread.<br />
-Next comes the tomato sauce and then top off with some pesto.<br />
- Garnish with olives, capers and a sprinkle of Italian seasoning.</p>
<p>Variation: This recipe works great using marinated whole mushrooms as a base instead of flax crackers.</p>
<p>• Marinate 12 mushrooms in 1/4c tamari and 1/4c olive oil for 2 hours or more.<br />
• Fill the mushroom caps with the nut cheese, tomato sauce and pesto. </p>
<p>Going heavier on the amount of pesto works really nicely with mushrooms.<br />
• Once the mushrooms are stuffed, place in the dehydrator at 105 degrees F to warm through 1 &#8211; 2 hours.<br />

-3 bananas, peeled and sliced</p>

-small amount of honey (topping to taste)</p>
<p><strong>Dressing:</strong><br />
-juice of one lime<br />
-1/2 cup pineapple juice<br />
-1 teaspoon ground ginger</p>
<p><strong>Preparation:</strong><br />
Combine chopped and sliced fruits in a large serving bowl; toss गेंत्ली।Add small amount of honey to taste. Whisk together remaining ingredients in a small bowl or 1 cup measure. Pour dressing mixture over fruit and toss gently to combine. Cover and chill the fruit salad thoroughly before serving.<br />

<p>A Fast Food Restaurant is a quick service restaurant QSR. They are a specific type of restaurant and well known for  fast food and minimal table service. The food served in these restaurants is very often offered from a limited menu, and typically cooked and prepared in advance, kept hot and when an order is placed, it is then ready to be served. If the food is to be taken away, it will be packaged.</p>

<p>These restaurants are very often part of a restaurant chain, and the provisions they use are standardized ingredients and sometimes partially prepared food will be supplied to them through controlled channels. The first one most likely originated in the United States. Another variation of this is a catering van or truck, which has the advantage of mobility.</p>
<p>At the time of writing this article there are around 58 popular restaurants, and totalled together they offer almost 3000 menu items, and the number is still rising.</p>
<p>These restaurants are generally located in towns, cities, along major roadways, leisure parks and other easy to get to locations. </p>
<p>Many of these restaurants provide drive through facilities. A drive through facility enables customers to place an order and then pick it up at the customer service bay without leaving their vehicle.</p>
<p>Some of these restaurants provide dining areas where food can be ordered and eaten on the premises, and a few will even take orders by phone and deliver the food to the required address. Many pizza restaurants provide this delivery service at no extra cost to the customer, however a minimum order must be adhered to.</p>
<p>Fast food is any food that is quick, convenient and usually inexpensive. Fast food can be bought just about anywhere that sells food and snacks. </p>
<p>Vending machines, drive through restaurants and 24hr convenience shops are the most common places to obtain fast food.</p>
<p>Fast food is generally cheaper because it is made with cheaper ingredients such as, refined grains, added sugar and high fat meat. Many of these quick and convenient meals contain a high amount of sodium which can increase the risk of high blood pressure. Sodium can also lead to build-up of fluids in case of people with congestive heart failure, cirrhosis or kidney disease.</p>
<p>Today most fast food chains are responding to customers comments by changing their menus to more healthy alternatives, and these can include more fruits and vegetables, and reducing the amount of fat, salt and added sugar on many of their menu items.</p>

<p>The easiest approach is to check the internet. There have been books printed with &#8220;famous&#8221; recipes, like how to make a homemade Big Mac. (The secret sauce is Thousand Island Dressing &#8211; who knew?) You may be able to find out what steak spices your favorite steak house uses, or the ingredients to make that amazing salad dressing that you can&#8217;t get enough of. </p>
<p>It is amazing just how much information is out there. Sometimes a little surfing is enough. Some restaurants even publish the recipes on their websites.</p>
<p>If you are a regular at a restaurant, try to find out information. Servers usually are well versed in the menu and how each dish is prepared. Usually they are privy to the secrets that the kitchen staff uses to get the flavor just right. In university, I worked as a server in a restaurant. It wasn&#8217;t cheap food, but it wasn&#8217;t a place you needed to dress up for. When a new item was introduced to the menu, the servers had to learn the ingredients, how things were cooked, basically the same information as the kitchen staff. That way, if a customer ever asked a question about it, we could answer. Sometimes just asking the server is enough. If you are a regular, and have been known to tip well, if there is something the server isn&#8217;t sure of, you can bet they will go into the kitchen and try to find out the information you are looking for. </p>
<p>In fact, some cooks and chefs are so flattered that you appreciate their good food, they will come out themselves and you can easily get pieces of information out of them.</p>
<p>If you are the quiet type, and asking these questions seems a little bit too difficult, you can still figure out a lot by looking at your dinner. Most menus will list ingredients, especially now with all the allergies people have. Write them down. Sneak out your cell phone when your dinner comes, and take a picture. Then, dissect your food. Sure it may take away some of the pleasure for that sitting, but you can look really find out a lot just by taking a deeper look at what is on your plate.</p>

<p>Ingredients:<br />
1/2 head Napa cabbage, thinly sliced<br />
1/2 zucchini, julienned<br />
2 jumbo carrots, julienned<br />
2 green onions, sliced<br />
1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds<br />
3 tablespoons shaved coconut<br />
3 tablespoons roasted unsalted peanuts<br />
2 tablespoons toasted almonds</p>
<p>Thai Slaw Dressing:<br />
8 ounces Thai sweet chili sauce<br />
8 ounces orange juice<br />
1/2 ounce honey<br />
1/2 teaspoon fresh ginger, chopped fine<br />
1/2 teaspoon light brown sugar<br />
1 teaspoon cilantro, chopped fine<br />
1 tablespoon sesame oil</p>
<p>Instructions for salad: Combine the cabbage, zucchini, carrots, sesame seeds , onions, coconut, peanuts and the almonds in large mixing bowl. Refrigerate until ready to serve.</p>
<p>Instructions for Thai dressing: Place ingredients in a small mixing bowl and whisk them all together. Slowly add the sesame oil while you continue to whisk. Pour desired amount, about 1/4 cup, over chilled salad. Enjoy!</p>
